Leaving Sawmill marked the beginning of the next phase of our journey; first to the panhandle of Florida and then west to Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California. Our first stop after Sawmill was heading north to the Old Pavilion RV Park in Perry, Florida. The best part about our stay at the Old Pavilion was the view of the Gulf of Mexico, as our RV was literally backed up to the Gulf with our bedroom window overlooking it!
We enjoyed the beautiful sunsets on each night we were there. Unfortunately, it was extremely windy on both days we were there. This made being outdoors not very pleasant and basically ruined our plans to sit outside with a glass of wine and enjoy the sunset (we did it anyway but went inside the RV quickly after sunset).
On our only full day at Old Pavilion, despite the wind, we walked less than a mile down to Hodges Park at Keaton Beach, which is a small beach near the campground. We enjoyed the view from a pier and gazebo near the beach, and returned to the RV in time for sunset. Off to a different Gulf view at our next campground.
Review of Old Pavilion RV Park in Perry, Florida
Old Pavilion RV Park is very basic in that it has no amenities like laundry, onsite restaurants, or bars; however, it has full hookups (water, electrical, sewer) and a view you can’t beat. The site map on the website says there is a bathroom/shower located on site; however, we did not see the bathroom/shower as we walked around the campground (though we weren’t looking for it). Old Pavilion has a boat ramp, and there is a place to buy bait nearby. Booking is by phone and they only take cash/checks for payment.
Old Pavilion is walking distance to Hodges Park at Keaton Beach, which has a small beach front; a fishing pier; picnic areas under gazebos; and a playground. Old Pavilion is not walking distance to any restaurants, bars, or stores; but it is about 5 miles driving distance from a country store. Basically, you have only the Gulf view to enjoy while at Old Pavilion, which we did immensely.
We probably would not return to Old Pavilion for an extended stay but when we need to break up the trip between the panhandle and central Florida, it’s a great place to stop. We highly recommend it to anyone who wants to experience camping ON the gulf. Say hello to the very friendly campground manager, Lynn, if you go there!
